"GATEWAY: SENSUAL SURFACES" 03/31/2026
Gateway is a multidisciplinary project I developed during my senior year of college, exploring my Jewish cultural heritage alongside my identity as a genderfluid and queer designer.
Although I was raised in a Jewish household, I never felt strongly connected to the religious aspects of Judaism. Instead, Judaism existed as a distant marker of identity, while its cultural elements remained deeply embedded in my everyday life—from incorporating Yiddish expressions into my vocabulary to wearing a Star of David and admiring the mezuzah on my front door.
My final artifact is an abstract acrylic menorah engraved with patterns inspired by the ark of the synagogue I attended growing up. D-rings extend from each of its four “lights,” referencing hardware I frequently incorporate into my fashion design practice. Suspended from these rings are printed textiles inspired by the embroidery on my tallit (the Jewish prayer shawl I wore for my bar mitzvah).
